Paper Abstract:
|
Multimodal transport constitute the optimal alternative of the future since it appropriately addresses the continuously stringent requirements for reduction of roads congestion, improves the protection of the environment, and supports the conservation of energy while meeting and sometimes exceeding the ever increasing transport customers expectations, in terms of range, type and quality of logistical services. Unfortunately, terms such as intermodal transport or multimodal transport have not received a lot of attention, in the past; the concepts per se have been unclear, both as definition and area of activity. The main objective of this paper is to shed some light in this respect. In the first part of the study, an effort was made to define and delimit clearly, the boundaries of these concepts and the afferent relationships. In addition, the study tried to present the characteristic elements of the multimodal transport, as a basis for all other types of transport carried out, simultaneously, via several modes. The second part of the study, argued in favor of supporting the existing European policy of multimodal transports while the final part analyzed the prerequisites and trends of multimodal transport developments in Romania, in agreement with, both, the European requirements and the national needs, in terms of transport mobility. |
